Extra trivia night at the George & Dragon.
Dude, this shit was HARD. We think that we got 18/40 right. The winner had 24/40. I'm going to ask you some questions and I'll put the answers in the comments. If you're HONEST about it (and it doesn't count if you were at the trivia night with me, you know who you are), and don't look at the answers before you look at the comments, we can have a little contest: in the comments, tell me how many of these you get right, and maybe you'll win a prize. I don't know what the prize will be, but at least you'll be given credit on this here blog and all of the Internet will know that you're the smartest of the half dozen people who actually read this blog.
Sweet.
Here are the questions.
1. Which country has the most universities?
2. What are the 2 professions of leprechauns?
3. How many noble gases are there?
4. Between which 2 cities is the shortest intercontinental flight?
5. How many rounds are in an official Olympic boxing match?
6. What does "UNESCO" stand for?
7. What does the "MP" in "MP3" stand for?
8. In Italy, what character is known as "Topolino?"
9. In which US city were traffic lights first used?
10. How many hurdles are in an official 400 m race?
11. What number does the Roman numeral M with a bar over it represent?
12. What was Halie Sellassie's real name?
So, don't look at the comments if you're going to play.

10 Comments:
Answers!
1. India (we put the US)
2. tailors and cobblers (we got cobblers)
3. 6 (right!)
4. Gibraltar and Tangiers (not even close)
5. 4 (we put 15)
6. United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (we got the U, N, and O)
7. Moving Picture (wrong--despite having Teman who's on the freaking Portable Media Center project at Microsoft on our team)
8. Mickey Mouse (wrong)
9. Detroit (we SHOULD have put this, we wrote Chicago)
10. 10 (RIGHT!)
11. 1 million (we were unsure between this and 10 thousand, of course we wrote the wrong thing)
12. Ras Taffarian (we were wrong--and I can't find exact confirmation of this with google, but I assume it's right)
A couple of things:
5. We actually put 12. Which was also totally wrong.
8. You neglected to mention that you actually suggested this but we decided against it.
12. I think his name was actually Ras Tafari.
Thanks again for participating! I really enjoyed it.
Whoops, good saves, Colin.
But I think this may all be unnecessary because I don't think anyone's actually going to participate! [sniff]
Honestly, I would have put the questions up and had people post their guesses before giving the answers. But then I'm evil like that.
Y'all have much harder trivia than we do around here, based on that list.
Here're the ones I got right:
1. India (was thinking China at first)
3. 6
4. Tangiers/Gibraltar
6. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
7. Moving Picture
12. I'd always thought it was Tafari Makonnen (and Wikipedia confirms that, FWIW.) "Ras" is a title. Maybe your trivia master needs to be grilled?
Ugh. Not very many. I've deleted the wrong ones, because I'm chicken like that.
this just confirms what I already knew, which is that I am still at the undergraduate trivia level.
So far Rotorglow is the big winner! Come on, people--enter! You get a chance to win the big prize.
But honestly, SIX RIGHT??? I don't think anyone's going to beat that. That is very very impressive. You knew all of those? (I'm totally not doubting you, just impressed.)
You should not (necessarily) be impressed. I made a lucky guess on 1. On 2, I knew the answer was six, but couldn't come up with what they are. 12 seems to be up for debate, and anyway, who really knows. Afterall, he was (a) god, so that's a tricky thing.
I would have said 10000 for 11....
So....dunno. I tend toward self-deprecation, but this time I think it's justified.
i played, with no success, as expected.
I suck... I only got #11 right. :(
